Embroidered Twitter quotes could be the antidote for the over branded hoody
A touching and slightly melancholy project by Brooklyn-based artist Iviva Olenick caught our eye because of its potential for the hoody. She has been collecting and embroidering Twitter ‘poetry’, including her own less than 140 character verses under the alter ego @EmbroideryPoems.
Olenick has embroidered the surprisingly soulful verses on to handkerchiefs, which is a startling and brilliant contrast to the high-tech feed where they came from. Twitter seems an unlikely source for such a poignant project but the ‘poetry’ is genuinely intimate and darkly humorous.
With fashion retailers often guilty of the mundane over branding of the hoody or using cliched ‘life’s a beach’ quotes, they could learn a lot from Olenick’s project and more quirky sources for typography designs for the hoody.
Just so you know, the project is funded by the Brooklyn Arts Council from the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Also, you can actually buy the handkerchiefs.
Hoodywink salutes you Olenick – and Design Taxi for leading us to you!
