New York – so good it inspired us twice
We seem to be a little obsessed with American urban culture but we think you’ll forgive us for introducing you to a couple of effortlessly cool photographic treasure troves. Both offer a shop full of hoody inspiration that makes us feel all warm inside with design potential…
James and Karla Murray have been documenting New York’s urban beauty in all its richly gritty gorgeousness for years. Their unfussy but beautifully detailed photography of NY’s neighbourhood stores is totally absorbing and can be explored in their book ‘Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York’.
They have also just released a neon saturated second book called ‘New York Nights’, which documents the city’s nooks and crannies when most respectable people are tucked up in bed.
Whether it is an unassuming butchers, bakery, wholesaler, stationery store, sports shop, laundromat, grocers or dive bar, each image offers a wealth of design inspiration from signage, nostalgic typography and good honest urban cool.
